Mosquitoes – Unwelcome camping guests: annoying insect pests – part 1

Don’t let them ruin your trip! Protect yourself from stings, bites & disease

Annoying pests

Summer is the peak time for all those great camping and outdoor adventure trips, but guess what? It is also high season for all the annoying, stingy, bitty and potential camp-ruining insects. So the best way to fight them is to be prepared before you head to your next campsite, and pack your Phoenix Custom Truck Camper accordingly.

We found a useful article that lists the most common insect pests that can seriously annoy you outdoors. We’ve summed up this valuable information for you in a three-part series of posts. Here is the first and commonly known one:

Mosquitoes

These little winged foes are one of the most common insect pests in the United States. They are not just a big campsite nuisance, they can also carry a variety of dangerous and even fatal diseases, such as yellow fever, malaria, and West Nile Virus. Now, unless you get bitten by the carrier, most mosquito bites won’t infect you, but they can certainly cause itchy, inflamed, and sometimes even painful bumps where you were bitten.

But don’t over-worry, there are easy ways to help to prevent being a mosquito target:

Use insect repellent: this is the easiest and most effective way to deter mosquitoes anywhere. Just spray yourself down with a bug spray containing N-Diethyl-3-methylbenzamide, more commonly known as DEET. If you are sensitive to DEET or prefer natural bug repellents, eucalyptus and citronella oils can provide an effective result in keeping mosquitoes away.

Wear light and loose clothing: mosquitoes tend to be more attracted to dark-colored targets, so by wearing light-colored clothing you can try to avoid attracting them. Loose clothing puts more space between itself and your body, making it more difficult for mosquitoes to detect your skin.

Pack anti-itch medication: make sure your first-aid kit is fully stocked, including anti-itch medication to treat any bites or stings. We know it’s hard, but if you do get bitten try not to scratch the bites, as it easily break the surface of your skin, drawing blood that will then attract even more mosquitoes. If you can’t resist the urge, try slapping the area lightly or gently rubbing the skin surrounding the bite.

Don’t leave standing water: any source of standing water, even if it’s dirty, can serve as a breeding ground for mosquitoes. So dry all dishes thoroughly and immediately, and fill any nearby puddles with dirt when you arrive at your campsite.

Wear clean socks: believe it or not, fragrant feet can actually be a significant attractor of mosquitoes. Bring enough socks with you so that you can keep your feet dry during your trip and for best results, sprinkle baby powder inside them before putting them on.
