What is Geocaching?

To put it simply, Geocaching is a worldwide, real-world outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS enabled devices. The participants navigate to the given sets of specific GPS coordinates and attempt to find the geocache –which is the container- hidden at that location. There are almost 2.5 million active geocaches and over 6 million community members worldwide!

The history of the Geocaching beginnings is quite detailed, so we’ll try to make it short: in May 2000, President Clinton gave directions to discontinue the use of Selective Availability of GPS satellites, in order to make GPS technology more responsive to civil and commercial users worldwide. With this change, GPS enthusiasts had much to celebrate and they soon started to come up with ideas about how the technology could be used.

So it was that a computer consultant named Dave Ulmer, wanted to test the accuracy of the signal by hiding a navigational target in the woods. He called the idea the “Great American GPS Stash Hunt” and posted it in an internet GPS users group. It was simple: hide a container out in the woods and note the coordinates with a GPS unit. The finder would then have to locate the container with only the use of his or her GPS receiver. This started a snowball effect among the community, which grew through word of mouth, press articles, and even accidental cache discoveries.
